Craftsmen, their work in spotlight at Jubilee gala

The Ohio Designer Craftsmen will celebrate the work of local craft artists -- and its own longevity -- at its 50th Jubilee Gala.

The event will be held from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. April 6 at the Ohio Craft Museum, 1665 W. Fifth Ave.

Proceeds will help support museum exhibitions and educational programs.

The evening will include a silent auction of 100 fine-craft pieces donated by members of the Ohio Designer Craftsmen, said museum Director Betty Talbott.

Guests also will be able to dine on dishes prepared by some of Columbus' best restaurants and enter a raffle for a celebration gift basket.

"One of the great things about this event is the support we receive from businesses in the community, including the restaurants and those donating items for the auction or gift basket," Talbott said.

Ohio Designer Craftsmen was formed in 1963 by a group of craft-arts professors from across Ohio, she said.

"They wanted to have a group that would be able to put on exhibitions, promote craft arts and offer an opportunity to meet and exchange ideas," Talbott said.

The early 1960s was a time when many art organizations formed, but Ohio Designer Craftsmen is one of the few that remain, she said.

"The wonderful thing about our group is that we've been able to grow and expand over the years to include the museum and our educational programs, which are very popular," Talbott said.

Last weekend, there was a long waiting list for the family pysanki egg workshop held at the museum, she said. Additional pysanki egg workshops are being planned.

The museum itself is marking its 20th anniversary this year, Talbott said.

Upcoming exhibitions will include the Best of 2013 opening May 5, and later this summer, the museum will host a special exhibition of young and up-and-coming craft artists, she said.

A ticket order form for the April 6 gala is available at

Single tickets cost $39 ($27 tax-deductible) and patron tickets, which include a reserved table for four, cost $180 ($125 deductible).

Tickets also may be purchased at the door the evening of the gala, Talbott said.
