Grandview library finds next director in McDonnell
Marysville library director spent five years living in city
The Grandview Heights Public Library's board of trustees has selected Ryan McDonnell as the library's new director.
McDonnell currently serves as director of the Marysville Public Library and will begin his new job Sept. 1.
He will succeed Mary Ludlum, who will retire Aug. 31 after serving nearly 32 years at the Grandview library, including the past five years as director.
McDonnell said he is excited to join the Grandview team.
"It's a remarkable library with an outstanding staff, volunteers and community support," he said, "and Grandview is an exceptional community. I'm excited about getting the chance to come to Grandview."
McDonnell has worked at the Marysville Public Library since August 2003 and was appointed director in May 2005.
In addition to his public library experience, he also spent time in academic, special and corporate libraries.
"I think I was drawn to public libraries because I've always been committed to public service and care about helping people to learn and think," McDonnell said.
He earned his master's degree in library science from Kent State University in 2000 and a bachelor's degree in 1997 from Ohio State.
A native of northern Ohio, McDonnell lived for five years in Grandview during the late 1990s and early 2000s.
"I know what a special community Grandview is and how important the library is to the community," he said.
"I'm just thrilled that Ryan will be our new director," Ludlum said. "I've known him a long time and he's an outstanding choice."
Marysville is a member of the Central Library Consortium and McDonnell serves as the consortium's administrative director.
That experience matches well with the Grandview library's role as the administrating library for the consortium, Ludlum said.
"He's particularly knowledgeable about technology and has a clear vision of how to keep libraries ahead of the curve" in meeting the technological needs and wants of their patrons, she said.
McDonnell was one of three finalists for the Grandview position.
The other finalists were Tony Howard, service area manager for the Karl Road and Northern Lights branches of the Columbus Metropolitan Library; and Wendy Rawson, director of the Fitchburg Public Library in the Madison, Wis., area.
