The weights have been lifted and the conditioning is completed. Now the mental aspect comes into play more than ever for Grandview Heights High School wrestler Michael Falk and his three fellow district-qualifying teammates -- Tyler Fitzgerald, Alex Minnillo and Dan Satterthwaite.

On Friday and Saturday, they will represent the Bobcats at the Division III district tournament at Heath.

"All the hard work is done and over with," Falk said. "We just have to make sure we are ready and run through the motions of our techniques rather than do more weight-lifting and conditioning. That was done earlier in the season. Now is when that is put to use with your sound technique."

Falk (152 pounds) lost the sectional championship last Saturday to Johnstown's Scott Robinson, who pinned Falk in 5 minutes, 50 seconds. Despite the loss, Falk returns to the district tournament at 152 where last season he finished third and became the first state qualifier from Grandview in three seasons. On Friday, Falk (31-3) begins his quest to return to state against Ridgewood's Jake Ziegler (20-9).

"Falk is solid in every area," coach Andy DiSabato said. "He's lost two matches in the last two weeks, which is a little concerning. But he's good in all three positions: top, bottom and neutral. He's especially good at turning people over."

Falk has eight pins in his last 10 matches.

"I've been trying to focus on not leaving anything in my back pocket," Falk said. "I'm trying to go out there and wrestle loose and put everything I have to use, technique- and conditioning-wise. When I can do that I'm successful."

Minnillo (145) also lost out on a sectional title last Saturday. After pinning his first three opponents to reach the finals, Grandview's coaching staff decided to have Minnillo forfeit his title match.

"I held him out for precautionary reasons," said DiSabato, referring to Minnillo's unspecified injury that had the wrestler miss the MSL-Cardinal Division tournament on Feb. 13. "We want him to get another week and give him a legitimate shot at making state."

Minnillo (12-5) faces Fairland's Garrett Wireman (36-4). If Minnillo wins his first match, he is expected to wrester former teammate and current Utica sectional champion Nathan Blackwell (29-5) of West Jefferson.

Grandview also had two third-place finishers at the sectional in Tyler Fitzgerald (140) and Dan Satterthwaite (215). The four wrestlers led Grandview to a seventh-place finish with 84.5 points, behind champion Northmor (218.5).

Fitzgerald (22-8) opens Friday against Martins Ferry's Dominick Driver (26-10) and Satterthwaite (9-4) drew Bellaire's Bob Bennett (31-12).

"Michael is our best chance at making it through to state," DiSabato said. "But, right now our focus is on all four of these guys and we're hoping we can get a couple to the state tournament."
