An early start is being planned for this year's Building Safety Week, May 5-11.

Grove City Building Division officials will be holding a community event open to all on Saturday, May 3, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Home Depot, 1680 Stringtown Road. A variety of local experts and entities will be represented to offer information, tips and pointers.

"Representatives of the Grove City Building Division as well as several other central Ohio agencies will be on hand to answer questions about a variety of issues ranging from building safety and property maintenance to weather emergencies," according to an announcement from the city's Web site.

Ron Specht, a home improvement expert for WCHM-TV and kitchen designer for Home Depot, will be appearing during the May 3 expo. Jackson Township Division of Fire officials will be offering of a smoke trailer and providing training on use of fire extinguishers.

Those attending may trade in their old mercury thermometers for digital ones at the Franklin County Board of Health booth. Radon test kits will also be offered along with information about the board's housing rehabilitation programs.

Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio representatives will provide information about hazardous waste collection and recycling while officials from the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission will be available to discuss housing and community service programs.

Rebuilding Together Central Ohio, a Grove City-based nonprofit organization, will be represented, as well. Rebuilding Together provides home repairs for low-income and elderly residents.

There will be a raffle for a 32-square-foot playhouse, with proceeds benefiting the Grove City Food Pantry.

"Safety equipment ranging from fire extinguishers to weather radios to egress windows also will be on display," according to the Grove City Web site.

Building Safety Week was first observed in 1980. It is sponsored by the International Code Council, a membership organization dedicated to building safety and fire prevention.
