Friends of a Grove City family for whom 2007 was a very rough year, one beset with medical problems for both Adam and Laura Jacobs, will be holding a benefit on Saturday, May 3.

The event to help the couple and their two young children will take place from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Derby, 2209 Stringtown Road.

The fund-raiser, which will include a silent auction for which donation items are being sought, is being organized by friends Clete Boyer and Dan Garner, as well as other members of Adam Jacobs' family, brothers Mat and Brett and parents Paul and Judy.

Items already lined up for the benefit, according to a letter of appeal distributed to business owners in Grove City, include a three-day trip, tickets to professional and college sports contest, lawn care service, auto detailing, sports memorabilia and restaurant gift certificates.

As outlined in letters seeking support from Adam Jacobs as well as his parents, the joy of the birth of the couple's second child, daughter Olivia, on Sept. 15 was overshadowed somewhat by an infection that developed in her cesarean incision. Then that medical problem was further overshadowed by something even worse on Nov. 28, according to the letter from Adam Jacobs.

"The headaches and dizziness that I had been having were diagnosed as a large mass in my head," he wrote. "The tumor was on a nerve by my right ear and pressing up against my brain stem."

He underwent surgery for the non-cancerous tumor at the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital beginning at 7:30 a.m. on Dec. 7 and not concluding until 2:30 a.m. Dec. 8, according to the letter. He was able to come home to recuperate four days later.

Those interested in participating may call Judy Jacobs at 875-0905 or Mat Jacobs at 448-7024.

In addition, an account has been set up for the family at the Heartland Bank on Old Stringtown Road.
