The 25th anniversary of "That Championship Season" for the Grove City High School Girls Softball Team will be celebrated at Hutcheson Field on Saturday, May 3.

Many of the young women, who were girls when they brought home the State Softball Division I Championship in 1983, will be on hand for the celebration, which is to take place at approximately 1 p.m. between tournament games for the varsity squad, according to a letter from GCHS softball liaison Amy Coleman to Mayor Richard L. "Ike" Stage, who will be on hand to present a proclamation.

In case of inclement weather, the event is to be held inside the high school at 4665 Hoover Road.

"These young athletes put Grove City on the softball map and created a legacy that has yet to be matched," Coleman wrote.

In addition to the players, parents and other family members as well as friends are invited to join in the observation.

Ron Hutcheson, for whom the field is named, was coach of the 1983 championship team, along with Sandy Kidwell.

The players were Audie Hayes, Audie Rollins, Crystal Lilly, Denise Walters, Dortha Ford, Jenni Ruoff, Karen Holmes, Kathy Merriman, Kerry Gleich, Kim McKeon, Lisa Norris, Lori Patzer, Sherry Zeller, Teresa Eisel, Tracy French and Tracy Smith.

"(T)his is the only state championship team on record for the high school, and these young ladies deserve a championship celebration," Coleman wrote to Stage. "We are proud to honor them and hope that you will be able to join us to celebrate."
