Kerry Denino of Grove City was recently elected co-director with her mother, Char Gurney, of the chorus.

The Harmony Classic is an international competition whose competitors qualify by winning their division at regional contest and in addition, by being one of the five highest scoring choruses in the world.

Scioto Valley Chorus boasts 60 members from Columbus and the surrounding areas.

"They have been waiting for the worldwide contest season to come to a close, to find out which choruses would qualify," according to a spokeswoman.

The Scioto Valley Chorus is an educational organization of women whose purpose is to teach and train members in the American art form of four-part harmony in the barbershop style. Organized in 1988, members of the group all who love to sing and perform.  They are open for membership and rehearse on Monday nights at 6400 Post Road in Dublin.

Co-director Char Gurney, a former resident of Grove City, suffered a heart attack last October as the chorus was preparing for an annual show and the 2008 regional competition, the spokeswoman indicated.

"They needed someone to fill in and the obvious choice was Kerry," according to the spokeswoman.

She had been among the founding members when only 13 years old. Kerry's accomplishments with the organization include, section leader, choreographer, and assistant director, of Scioto Valley Chorus.  Her quartet "Spotlight" won the world champion title of Queens of Harmony when they won the international competition in 2005.

"She co-directed them through contest where they won their division and the chorus elected her as permanent co-director," the spokeswoman added.
