Grove City resident Elizabeth Burton was recently awarded the 2009 Tradition of Caring Nursing Scholarship from Newcomer Funeral Homes.

Grove City resident Elizabeth Burton was recently awarded the 2009 Tradition of Caring Nursing Scholarship from Newcomer Funeral Homes.

She will attend MedCentral College of Nursing this fall. In her application essay, Burton said she wanted to become a nurse after seeing the kind of compassionate care they provided to an ill family member.

A panel of local nursing professionals selected Burton as the winner of the $1,000 scholarship.


Single-parent families are invited to a day of fun from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, at the Grove City Church of the Nazarene, 4770 Hoover Road.

This free event will include backpacks filled with school supplies, haircuts, door prizes, face painting, motorcycle rides, live entertainment, a cookout, gently used clothing and more.

Visit the fire trucks, DARE child identification booth, craft tables, cake walk and inflatable games. Radio station 104.9, the River, will also be on site.

The Harrisburg Library Association will host a display of quilts Saturday, Aug. 1.

Those who would like to display a quilt, old or new, should drop it off at the library between 4 and 6 p.m. Thursday, July 30. The library is at 1036 High St.

The quilts will be on view until pickup, scheduled for between 4 and 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1. Quilts will not be judged, but the viewers will have a chance to vote for a People's Choice Award.

The library association will also sponsor a baking contest. The children's contest will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. Friday, July 31, for cookies and brownies. The adult contest will be held from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 1. Adult may enter pies, cakes, breads, rolls, cookies and brownies. All entries will be auctioned by Roger Miller Auctions at 5 p.m. at the VFW bandstand. Proceeds benefit the library.

Dress for Success Columbus will host its first annual "Cocktails for a Cause" gala from 7 to 11 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21, at COSI Columbus, 333 W. Broad St.

The event will raise awareness for Dress for Success and its mission to help central Ohio women on their paths to self-sufficiency. The evening will feature a Speakeasy atmosphere, a Charleston dance performance by Nomel Dance Theatre, a fashion show presented by local boutiques, silent auction with works by local artists and live music by local jazz band Gruvment.
