In its first season under coach Elise Berry a year ago, the Ready High School girls soccer team won a Division II postseason game for the first time since 2003 and doubled its number of victories.

The addition of several incoming impact players combined with a group of five seniors has the Silver Knights believing they can continue that progression.

"I was a little skeptical coming in, but I'm very happy," Berry said. "We've gotten some nice surprises so far."

Back to lead the way are seniors Jessie Eramo (forward), Paige Hamilton (outside-defender), Val Lemery (outside-midfielder), Heather Manning (sweeper) and Liz Mercer (outside-midfielder), junior Emily Morris (defender) and sophomore Lauren Graessle (midfielder/forward). Manning and Eramo both made first-team all-CCL and Graessle made the second team. Eramo was second-team all-district.

Juniors Clare Bochy (forward) and Brooke Thompson (midfielder), sophomore Ciara Carr and freshmen Donavon Capehart (forward/midfielder) and Brooke Ringel (midfielder) are expected to be regulars despite being in their first year with the program.

Others on the team include junior Sam Ross (midfielder), sophomores Taylor Cutteridge (defender), Alaina Monsey (goalkeeper) and Marisa Ross (defender) and freshman Hailey Cartt (defender).

The Silver Knights went 3-10-2 overall and 0-5 in the CCL in 2007 but improved to 6-5-3 overall and 1-2-2 in the league behind champion DeSales (5-0) last year. In the postseason, Ready beat Buckeye Valley 5-1 in a first-round game before falling to Wellington 5-0.

"I'm trying to build on last year," Berry said. "They all had a year of training and they know what to expect from me. Last year I think they were all pleasantly surprised. Hopefully we're building something here with Ready soccer."

•Mark Ryan enters his first year as coach for the boys soccer team. He replaces Clyde Bowman, who stepped down after after one season and a 1-13-2 record, including 0-5 in the CCL.

The Silver Knights open Tuesday against visiting Johnstown.

"It's been going well so far," Ryan said. "I've seen some very good things so far and I was really excited with how we played (in a 3-1 scrimmage victory over Liberty Union on Aug. 22)."

With 25 players, about 17 will see time on varsity and a group of eight freshmen as well as a few varsity players will play some junior varsity games.

Back as seniors and serving as captains are Patrick Atchison (stopper), Tom Rysavy (forward/center-midfielder) and Mark Zimmerman (utility).

The other seniors are Mike Escolas (defender/midfielder), Alex Francis (defender), Alex Kegelmeyer (midfielder) and Sean Lawler (goalkeeper).

Expected to be key players at midfielder are juniors Robert Reed, Steve Rysavy and Joel Thomas and sophomores Zak Wiser and John Wright.

Sophomore Josh Colley is the sweeper, while Matt Feldkamp and Joey Waldo are competing at goalkeeper. Kyle Carrera is at defender and Paul Ley is at forward.

Last season, the Silver Knights' lone win was over Northside Christian 4-0. They tied Liberty Christian and lost to Johnstown 3-2 in the first round of the Division III district tournament.

"If we have success this year, a lot of the credit will have to go to coach Bowman for teaching them the skills," Ryan said. "We're focused on getting through the sectional and at least getting to the district this year. Obviously, we'd like to do well in the CCL, but where we are come October is the most important thing."
