Mayor Richard "Ike" Stage dedicated a baseball diamond at Windsor Park to Ernest Plank Oct. 21.

Plank, 83, was among volunteers who worked to build baseball diamonds at Windsor Park in the early 1950s. He served as Grove City High School's head football coach from 1950-55.

He has been inducted into the Miami University Hall of Fame and into the Cradle of Coaches, also at Miami University.

He holds four Super Bowl rings for his work with the San Francisco 49ers in the 1980s.

Now field six at Windsor Park will be known as the Ernie Plank Field of Dreams.

"This is really special for me," Plank said. "It's quite an honor, but I'm not sure I deserve it much."

City council members approved an ordinance Oct. 19 to dedicate officially the field to Plank. The ordinance also appropriated $3,200 from the city's Parks Donation Fund to purchase the scoreboard with Plank's name on it.

"It's too bad the school board here in town doesn't appreciate sports," Plank added during his speech.

"I've yet to see a high school that has as good an athletics program as this school here. So, get that school board here to get that football team ready."
