The Ohio Department of Transportation on Jan. 28 approved accelerated construction of Grove City's $34.7-million project to overhaul the Interstate 71-state Route 665 interchange.

The approval from ODOT's Transportation Review Advisory Council gives Grove City officials the ability to spend state and federal dollars earmarked for the project before for the window closes on those dollars in March.

Also, the Ohio Department of Development on Jan. 26 awarded Grove City a $2-million grant for the project.

The project will upgrade the 50-year-old infrastructure to a single-point urban interchange. Construction is expected to start in October and be finished by the end of 2011, city officials said.

The project has received support from businesses, state lawmakers, the city of Columbus and U.S. Rep. Mary Jo Kilroy.
