Village Chapel United Methodist Church, at 30 Circleville Ave. in Ashville, will sponsor a Freedom 5K and Fun Run Saturday, July 3.

Village Chapel United Methodist Church, at 30 Circleville Ave. in Ashville, will sponsor a Freedom 5K and Fun Run Saturday, July 3.

Race day registration is $20 and will be held from 7 to 9 a.m. Proceeds will benefit The Way Skatepark and International Justice Mission.

The 5K run-walk will begin at 9:30 a.m. Top male, female and age group winners will be honored.

The Fun Run will begin at 10:30 a.m., and is open to children ages 3 through middle school. Fun runners can compete in a variety of distances, from 50 yards to half a mile.

Southwest Public Libraries is sponsoring the "Summer Scribbles" writing contest this summer.

The contest is open to any incoming seventh- and eighth-grade students who live in the South-Western City Schools district.

Visit the Grove City or Westland library for rules and entry forms. Cash prizes will be awarded for first-, second- and third-place winners in each of two categories: fiction and essay/poetry. Submissions are due by Aug. 2.

Erin Flavin, the daughter of Mike and Pat Flavin of Grove City, recently received the 2010 Bishop Herrmann Service Award.
