The second annual Hoops Off Broadway 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament will feature something new, a contest involving several community leaders in addition to a youth competition.

The Grove City Area Chamber of Commerce will host the event beginning at 8:15 a.m. Saturday Aug. 7. in town center. Girls and boys ages 8 through 17 will compete on courts set up in the City Hall parking lot and along Park Street. Chamber executive director Bill Diehl said he expects 140 players, in self-selected teams of three or four players.

Before the youth games begin at 9 a.m., government officials will square off against Grove City High School varsity basketball coach Greg Waits and 2009 chamber president John Dunn in a charity free-throw shooting contest. Also competing will be Grove City mayor Richard "Ike" Stage, South-Western City Schools superintendent Bill Wise and Jackson Township administrator Mike Lilly.

The winning team will get $300 to donate the charity of its choice.

The 3 on 3 tournament raises money to support the Chamber of Commerce, the American Red Cross and the Grove City High School boys basketball program. Last year, the tournament hosted 50 teams and 200 players on 14 courts.

Teams will play to 15 points or 20 minutes, whichever comes first. Baskets behind the take-back line are two points. Others are worth one point. Referees will officiate, and players foul out after three fouls.

The registration fee is $100 per team. The registration deadline is Aug. 2. Forms can be found at www.gcchamber.org. Teams will be organized into divisions by age and gender. All participants will receive T-shirts and door prizes. The winners in each division will receive awards.
