Evans Center sees steady rise in volunteerism
The Evans Center in Grove City last year logged more than 5,500 hours of volunteer service, a number that more than doubled 2004’s 2,050 hours of service.
The Evans Center staff credits the increase over seven years to improved communication of volunteer opportunities.
“I think we are better about getting the word out,” Evans Center coordinator Bev Longmire said. “It has been expanding every year.”
The Evans Center, at 4330 Dudley Ave., which opened in 1982, has a staff of just three people with a membership numbering 1,300. About 200 of those members are at the center daily, participating in activities and exercise programs. About 100 members usually attend the center’s parties and other events.
Last year, about 97 volunteers logged hours with the Evans Center, teaching computer classes and bridge; manning the front desk, maintaining libraries and helping with parties and crafts. Volunteers serve as directors for the center’s choir band and acting groups, and others pick up donated food from various local providers. Individuals also help out at area senior homes and other places in the community. In 2004, the center had about 45 volunteers.
Volunteers often lighten the workload of the existing staff.
About 60 people participate in the center’s weekly Nintendo Wii bowling games.
“It’s a wonderful activity for our seniors,” Longmire said.
Volunteers manage the scores and the standings, and set up the game and assist players.
“It would be very time consuming for our staff to manage that,” Longmire said.
Nintendo Wii bowling, computer classes and even genealogy are examples of activities that were added to the center because volunteers were there to provide them.
Volunteers also call a list of about 5-10 seniors daily, contacting shut-ins to check up on them.
“That may be the only phone call that they get for the whole day,” activity leader Judy Lewis said.
Volunteers for the center must be 55 and older, and preferably should be members of the center.
“We’ve met some incredibly wonderful and giving people,” Longmire said.
Evans Center hours are 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Those interested in volunteering should call (614) 277-1060.
