In the best game she ever bowled, Fran Quelette scored 230.

"I still keep trying," Quelette said. "I've slowed down a bit in recent years, but I don't want to be a couch potato."

Quelette turned 90 years Tuesday, July 10. But on Monday, her fellow members of the Grove City Senior Bowling League threw her a birthday celebration at the Stardust Lanes bowling alley, 2434 Old Stringtown Road.

She began her day's game by bowling a pair of spares. The left-handed Quelette said she does not really have much in the way of strategy or technique.

"I just throw," she said.

Quelette has been a member of the Grove City Senior League since it first formed in the early 1980s.

"I'm the only original (player) left," she said. "I just enjoy it for all the exercise I get and the friends I meet."

In addition to bowling, Quelette also plays cards three nights a week and bingo two nights a week. She's also a member of Moose International. She has travelled to Europe three times and been on 10 cruises.

A lifelong resident of the central Ohio area, Quelette currently lives in Groveport, having previously lived in Grove City from 1992 until about 2000.

She is a 1940 graduate West High School. Growing up, Quelette said she had a happy and active childhood, playing baseball and swimming.

"I swam a lot," she said.

Quelette said the drive to be active stems from her parents, particularly her mother whom she said had a rough life. Her parents were always doing stuff with her and her brother and sister, Quelette said.

Quelette first married in 1942 but became a single mother to her two sons, Denny Hysel and Rick Hysel, by 1948 before remarrying in 1957.

"They never gave me any problem," she said.

Quelette worked for Selective Service, working in the conscientious objectors division and later as an auditor. She also worked for the federal probation office before retiring due to a brain tumor in 1979.

"It was about a year or so before I could do anything," she said. "I haven't stopped since."

Quelette said she has always tried to live her life treating others the way she wants to be treated.

Following the Golden Rule has served her well.

"As far as friends and family, I'm the richest person in the world," she said. "I wouldn't trade any of them for a million dollars. ... It's been a wonderful life."
