'Dresses for Divas'
Churches work to help prom dreams come true
Local church members are working to make sure every local girl who wants to attend has the right outfit for prom.
On March 9, Buckeye Christian Church in Grove City, with help from Amazing Grace Church, will host Dresses for Divas, assisting girls from the southwest area of Columbus by providing dresses, shoes, jewelry and other accessories for prom they might not otherwise be able to afford.
"This will be our third year," said Patty Eggleton, Buckeye Christian Church member in charge of the women's ministry. "It's pretty exciting."
The first year the church conducted Dresses for Diva, 10 girls received dresses. Last year, that number grew to about 30. This year, Eggleton said, they hope help between 30 and 50 girls.
"We won't stop until every girl has a dress," Eggleton said. "We won't turn anyone away."
On the day of the event, the church, located at 1528 London-Groveport Road, will be set up for the girls to come in, pick out dresses and accessories and try them on in fitting rooms complete with mirrors.
"We turn our church into a huge shopping store," Eggleton said.
The girls arrive for the event by appointment. The church works with guidance counselors in area schools to identify the girls who would benefit from Dresses for Diva.
"With the cost of prom dresses and tickets going up, we thought if we could help them with getting dresses and shoes, then that would be beneficial," Eggleton said.
The idea for Dresses for Divas, Eggleton said, came from supporting similar functions elsewhere.
"We went out to Cinderella's Closet in Cincinnati," she said. "We came back out and decided we needed to do something in our area."
Currently, the church is accepting donations for the effort. Those interested in making a donation can contact the church at 614-871-0571 or Eggleton at eggleton.patty @gmail.com.
A tax receipt will be offered for donated items.
"Any formal wear," Eggleton said. "Any donations will be appreciated."
