Fest turns suds into funds for Pilot Dogs

Last year, the organizers of the Grove City Lions Club Spring Craft Beer Fest were told they could expect to lose money on the first-time event.

"We were told we going to lose hand over fist," said Sam Clark, club president and one of the event's chairmen. "We actually ended up making a little over $3,500 ... we're expecting it to grow this year."

The Grove City Lions Club Spring Craft Beer Fest returns for its second year from 2 to 6 p.m. April 27 at Beulah Park, 3811 Southwest Blvd. It will feature more than 120 varieties of craft beers from around the world as well as a silent auction and music.

"This is high-quality craft beer," Clark said. "It's a really great fundraiser with a nice, fun, laid-back atmosphere."

The club will use proceeds from the event to purchase a guide dog for a local, sight-impaired resident through Pilot Dogs.

Advance tickets, available now, are $35. Tickets available at the event will be $40.

In addition, the Lions Club is offering tickets for $5 for designated drivers. Designated drivers will receive a wristband that will enable them to get unlimited soda, a food voucher and, when they leave, a souvenir tasting glass.

"We're expecting a sellout, which is 500 tickets," Clark said.

Last year's event was held outdoors in a tent, but this year, the beer fest will be held in the historic Upper Club House of Beulah Park.

"It snowed last year," Clark said. "This year, we'll be able to control the climate."

Clark said the idea for a beer fest came when the Lions Club wanted to brainstorm a new fundraising idea that would be fun and reinvest in the community.

"We wanted to bring something new and different to Grove City," he said. "We wanted this to be a classy event."

Clark said the club is still looking for sponsors.

"The sponsors are what help us make this happen," he said.

Tickets, as well as information about sponsorship opportunities, are available online at springcraftbeer or by sending an email to

Admission includes a souvenir tasting glass and 20 tickets for samples of the beers available during the event.
