Band competition added to Franklin County Fair

Winner of July 15 contest to be determined by popular vote

By ThisWeek Community News  •

Franklin County Fair organizers are accepting applications for the Battle of the Bands scheduled Monday, July 15.

The band competition will replace the Franklin County Idol competition, which was modeled after the the nationally televised vocal contest, American Idol, said Allison Rushley, a senior fair board member and entertainment coordinator for the Franklin County Fair.

"It was a popular event, but we were getting fewer and few contestants each year, so we decided to try something new this year," Rushley said.

Six to eight bands will be selected to appear in the contest July 15, and the winner will be determined by popular vote, Rushley said.

Voters at the Battle of the Bands, which will begin at 6 p.m. at the grandstand, will be able to purchase three tickets for $1 or an "arm's length" for $5, Rushley said. Each ticket is used to cast one vote for a participating band.

The contest is open to all musicians and is not specific to a genre, band size or prior experience. Each group must consist of at least two people and must be "family friendly," Rushley said.

An entry fee of $25 will be collected, but the fee will be returned to bands not selected to compete.

The winning band will receive a cash prize from the entry fees and ticket sales, Rushley said.

Checks for $25, payable to the Franklin County Agricultural Society, must be received by June 1 and mailed to: Battle of the Bands c/o Franklin County Fair, P.O. Box 288, Hilliard, Ohio, 43026.

Bands must submit an audio sample of music, which will be used by a panel of senior fair board members and others yet to be determined to select the competitors for July 15.

Bands will be notified of the results by June 15.

Interested bands also can send inquiries via email to fcfairbattle@yahoo.com.

The 2013 Franklin County Fair will be held July 13-20 at the fairgrounds, 5100 Columbia St. in Old Hilliard.
