South-Western Board of Education members said farewell to one of their own at their June 10 meeting, and honored 29 retiring district staff members who are leaving as well.
Board member Jo Ellen Myers announced she will be resigning from the board effective June 24, contingent on the closing on the sale of her family's home in Grove City.
Myers said her family is moving to Florida, in part to be closer to her parents and because her husband's company has agreed to allow him to work out of the Sunshine State.
Although they previously had no desire to relocate in Florida, Myers said she and her husband were won over by the weather when they last visited her parents.
"I'm excited about this," she said, adding that she learned about "so many different things" during her 31/2 years on the board.
Board President Randy Reisling thanked Myers for her service on the board.
"No one is more passionate" about the positions they take on the board as Myers, he said.
"We've had some spirited conversations about things, but I always knew in your heart you were doing what you felt was the right thing" for the district and its students, Reisling said.
Myers is in the final year of her first term in office.
The board must name her replacement within 30 days and is accepting applications from residents.
Applicants should send a resume and cover letter to the attention of Reisling, 3805 Marlene Drive, Grove City 43123. Resumes must be received by Friday, June 21.
Applicants must be a residents of the district and registered voters.
The board plans to review all applications and vote on Myers' replacement at its July 8 meeting.
The 29 retiring staff members recognized included five administrators, 16 certified employees and eight classified employees.
The board also approved the promotion of two district staff members to administrative positions.
Jessica Cahill will take over as principal at Stiles Elementary School effective July 29. She has served the last four years as math coach at the school.
Katherine Nowak will become Hayes Intermediate School's principal effective July 25. She now serves as assistant principal at Jackson Middle School.
