Interstate 70 weekend lane restrictions set

ODOT says major delays expected and motorists should seek alternate routes

A construction project to rehabilitate three bridges on Interstate 70 began July 8 and weekend lane closures are planned through Sept. 15.

Work on the projects began at the state Route 256 interchange.

According to the Ohio Department of Transportation, the project includes five weekend lane closures at various locations on I-70 and one weekend ramp closure for motorists exiting I-70 for northbound state Route 256.

Weekend traffic will be affected on I-70 for work on the bridges spanning Route 256, Blacklick Creek and Palmer Road. Major delays are expected, ODOT officials said.

During the weekend closings, I-70 eastbound and westbound will be restricted to one lane of traffic.

The final weekend also includes an exit ramp closure.

The weekend restrictions will begin Fridays at 7 p.m. and conclude by 4 a.m. Mondays.

The remaining closing dates are:

* Aug. 9-11, westbound lanes only

* Aug. 23-25

* Sept. 13-15, eastbound only, Exit 112B closed. Alternate exit is 112C. Detour signs provided.

ODOT officials said significant delays of traffic can occur and motorists are urged to plan ahead to avoid delays.

Alternate routes for motorists will be posted for motorists traveling east or west on I-70.

These include:

* I-70 westbound: Take exit 126 for state Route 37, then go north on Route 37 to state Route 161, then west to Interstate 270 south.

* I-70 eastbound: Take I-270 north toward state Route 161, take Route 161 east to Route 37 south to enter I-70.

Construction will proceed on the east and west shoulders of I-70 throughout the duration of the project, with nighttime restrictions occurring as well, ODOT officials said.

ODOT's contractor for the $2.5-million project is Complete General Construction Co. from Columbus.

The completion date is expected to be Aug. 30, 2014.
