Grove City H.S. student named National AP Scholar
2013 graduate Chase Hartman hopes to become an astronaut
The South-Western Board of Education honored students who have earned Advanced Placement scholar awards and National Merit Scholarship recognition at its meeting Monday, Oct. 14.
The honorees included Chase Hartman, a member of Grove City High School's class of 2013, who earned a National AP Scholar award.
The award is granted to students who receive an average score of at least 4 on all AP exams they take and scores of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams, said Erik Shuey, executive director of secondary learning and athletics.
Shuey said it is the first time in his eight years in the district that a South-Western student has achieved the top AP honor.
Hartman, who is now attending the University of Cincinnati, scored a 5 on three of his AP exams, he said.
Chase's father, Bobby Hartman, told the board his son is participating in a program at the university that will allow him to earn both an undergraduate and master's degree in five years.
His son is pursuing his dream of becoming an astronaut, Hartman said.
The district has 17 students who earned AP Scholar with Distinction, an increase of three students from 2012, Shuey said.
The award is granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams, Shuey said.
Twenty-two students have been named AP Scholars with Honor, an increase of nine students over 2012, he said.
Those students received an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of the exams.
The district had 52 AP Scholars overall, an increase of 12 students from 2012, Shuey said.
The AP Scholar Awards recognize high school students who have demonstrated college-level achievement through AP courses and exams.
South-Western has one student -- Maya Gosztyla of Grove City High School -- who has been honored as a National Merit Scholarship Scholarship semifinalist, Shuey said.
Tarah Mason, Nicholas Shew and Liam Bailey from Grove City High School earned National Merit Commended Scholar honors.
