For Bernadette Atkins, life is too short to be anything other than positive.
"We're going to have fun," Atkins said. "That's what we do ... I can't stand (negativity)."
Atkins, a New Holland resident, recently relocated her five-year-old business, Deja Vu Boutique, from Washington Courthouse to 2802 London-Groveport Road in Grove City near the Interstate 71 and state Route 665 interchange. The store offers new brand-name, consigned, vintage and repurposed women's fashion, jewelry, boots and other accessories.
Atkins said she has a program for artisans in which they sell their products in the store at the price they name.
There's always something different in the store, Atkins said.
"It changes in here daily," she said. "You need to shop here regularly. ... Ninety-nine percent of our jewelry is handmade, one-of-a-kind artisan."
The grand opening for Deja Vu Boutique is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, which will include a VIP party with refreshments from 4 to 8 p.m.
"We're doing it Hollywood style," Atkins said.
There will be more events to come, including prom and homecoming parties.
"We're all about partying and having fun," Atkins said. "Our silliness comes out with our (events)."
Atkins said she never envisioned opening a shop in Grove City, but some Grove City customers approached her with the idea
"I just laughed it off," she said. "But they came back. They were serious."
Since then, Atkins said she has fit right in, joining the Grove City Area Chamber of Commerce and fostering relationships with the Town Center and other local businesses. Small, local businesses, Atkins said, are what made America.
Originally from the Dayton area, Atkins studied interior design in Cincinnati before finding work in the visual arts. Deja Vu Boutique itself grew out of a previous business of hers, a flower shop.
"Merchandising is my first love," Atkins said. "I've always loved fashion, and I've always loved to encourage people."
