Chief takes demotion to retire on a unit

Former Deputy Fire Chief Rick Dawson is now the acting fire chief of the Jackson Township Division of Fire, following Fire Chief Lloyd Sheets' request for a voluntary demotion.

In his letter, according to a press release from Jackson Township, Sheets said he wants to finish his career as a battalion chief, going on runs and working on a unit.

Sheets, who started his career as a volunteer firefighter with the fire department in 1978, was named fire chief in 2006. Dawson has worked at Jackson Township Division of Fire since 1982.

Dawson and Sheets' new assignments began on April 23.

A promotion ceremony for Dawson and three fire techs promoted to full-time positions will be held at the Jackson Township Board of Trustees meeting May 20 at 3756 Hoover Road.

Those fire techs are Timothy Damopoulos, Dustin McCoy and Chris Fraley, all Grove City residents.

* Also at its April 22 meeting, Jackson trustees formally introduced the new chaplain for the Division of Fire, the Rev. Tom Gale, pastor of the Southwest Grace Brethren Church.

Gale will complement the work of 23-year firefighter/paramedic Morgan Gierman, who serves as an unordained chaplain for the division.
