Grove City resident Tina Badurina on May 16 captured the title of the Leukemia Lymphoma Society's 2014 Woman of the Year after 10 weeks of campaigning and fundraising for the organization.
Among the candidates, Badurina raised the most money, collecting nearly $50,000 to support the LLS's mission to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. Collectively, the 11 nominees raised more than $345,000.
As part of her campaign, Badurina has been partnered with Evan Schroeder, the 2014 Boy of the Year. Evan, now 8, was 10 months old when he was diagnosed with juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia. In 2008, he underwent bone marrow transplants.
Badurina first got involved with the LLS after her father, Tony Badurina, died of chronic myelo-monocytic leukemia in 2008, a little less than a year after he was diagnosed.
