Shawver leads Grove City at sectional
Taylor Shawver reached the second round to lead the Grove City High School girls tennis team in the Division I sectional tournament Oct. 4 and 6 at Hilliard Davidson.
Shawver lost in the second round to Ashley Thai of Hilliard Bradley 6-0, 6-0, failing to reach the district tournament. The Greyhounds' junior defeated Shyla Smith of Marion-Franklin by default in the opener.
The top four finishers in singles and doubles advanced to district Friday, Oct. 12, and Saturday, Oct. 13, at Davidson.
In other singles play for Grove City, senior Ali Ronau lost to Davidson's Mary Carson 6-0, 6-1 in her opener and junior Katie Swartzentruber lost to Darby's Abby Schuster 6-4, 6-3 in the first round.
The doubles team of junior Molly Brown and sophomore Viki Rohr had a bye before losing to Hilliard Bradley's Kayla Bushee and Haley Jackson 6-4, 6-1. Seniors Ashley Hughes and Melissa Votaw lost to Marysville's Sammi Hunt and Reagan Yoakam 6-4, 6-2 in their opener.
Comets' Gabriel wins twice at sectional
Hannah Gabriel reached the district-qualifying round for the Central Crossing High School girls tennis team in the Division I sectional tournament held Oct. 4 and 6 at Pickerington Central, but the senior fell short of advancing.
The top four finishers in singles and doubles qualified for district Friday, Oct. 12, and Saturday, Oct. 13, at Hilliard Davidson.
Gabriel opened sectional with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Newark's Rachel Gough. The Comets' first-singles player then defeated Dresden Tri-Valley's Megan Penrose 6-4, 6-3 before losing to Watterson's Courtney Brown 6-0, 6-0 in a district-qualifying match.
Junior Brooke Cosgray lost to Pickerington Central's Audrey Covert 6-0, 6-0 in the opening round and senior Allyson Gregio lost to Westerville South's Katie Gough 6-2, 6-0 in her opener.
The first-doubles team of juniors Kristen Chandler and Faith Pauquette lost to Chloe Hallman and Marisa Sponsler of Mount Vernon 6-2, 7-6 in the first round. In their opener, senior Sierra Downing and sophomore Savannah Kovacs lost to Westerville South's Ama Kwarteng and Lexi Hunkler 6-0, 6-1.
