Senior Jack Bailey of the Grove City High School boys swimming team finished second in the 100-yard freestyle (48.74 seconds) and third in the 50 free (22.12) to lead the Greyhounds to a fifth-place tie in a 12-team Division I sectional meet Feb. 9 at Upper Arlington.
Bailey qualified for district in both events and freshman Kalvin Koethke was fourth in the 50 free (22.27) and seventh in the 100 free (50.26) to also advance in both events for the Greyhounds, who scored 105 points and tied Westerville South behind champion Upper Arlington (351). Other district qualifiers were junior William Best (500 free), freshman Isaac Stretch (100 breaststroke) and all three relays.
Sophomore Margo Leist advanced for the girls team, finishing 10th in the 200 free (2:07.43). The girls' 200 free (1:51.13, eighth) and 400 free (4:10.15, fifth) relays also advanced, and the team was eighth (35) behind champion UA (463).
Central Crossing's boys and girls teams each qualified all relays for district, but no individuals advanced. The boys placed 10th (24) and the girls were 12th (15) at sectional.
The winner of each sectional event qualified for district Saturday, Feb. 16, at Ohio State. In addition, 27 at-large district berths were awarded in each event based on times from the Central, East and Southeast sectional sites.
The top two placers in each swimming event at district automatically advance to the state meet Feb. 21-23 at Branin Natatorium in Canton. In addition, 16 at-large state berths will be awarded for each swimming event based on times statewide. The top three boys divers and top four girls divers at district advance to state.
