The Grove City High School boys basketball team opened the Division I district tournament by defeating 33rd-seeded Hilliard Davidson 77-51 on Feb. 22 at home.
The 16th-seeded Greyhounds improved to 15-8 and played at seventh-seeded Dublin Coffman in the second round Feb. 27.
The winner will play fifth-seeded Dublin Scioto or 10th-seeded Pickerington Central in a district semifinal at 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 6, at Pickerington North.
The Greyhounds split two games with Pickerington Central, the defending Division I state champion, during the regular season. Grove City lost 74-64 on Dec. 21 and won 79-66 on Feb. 1 in OCC-Ohio Division games.
The semifinal winner will play fourth-seeded New Albany, sixth-seeded Zanesville, 18th-seeded Olentangy Orange or 28th-seeded Mount Vernon in a district final March 9 at the Fairgrounds Coliseum.
Against Davidson, Grove City outscored the Wildcats 20-4 in the second quarter to take a 29-16 halftime lead.
Guard Brandon Bapst led the Greyhounds with 17 points. Guards Tyler Dunn and Tyler Hale each scored 12 points.
"We knew Hilliard Davidson was going to play us tough," coach Greg Waits said. "Defensively, they were really good, but we shot it really well in the second quarter."
Last season, Davidson defeated Grove City 54-50 in the second round of the district tournament.
Comets open against Northland
Central Crossing opened the Division I district tournament by playing at top-seeded Northland on Feb. 27 in the second round.
The Comets, who had a first-round bye, were seeded 41st and 2-20 overall before playing the Vikings.
Northland defeated 42nd-seeded Hilliard Bradley 71-37 in the first round Feb. 22.
The winner advanced to play 12th-seeded Westerville South or 20th-seeded Walnut Ridge in a district semifinal at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 6, at Marysville, with that winner moving on to a district final against third-seeded Olentangy Liberty, 11th-seeded Westland, 23rd-seeded Dresden Tri-Valley or 24th-seeded Westerville Central on March 9 at the Fairgrounds.
