Greyhounds, Comets set for sectional
Seniors Chris Laine and Bryton Wise of the Grove City High School boys tennis team placed fourth in first doubles in the OCC-Ohio Division tournament May 11 at Rey-noldsburg, and the Greyhounds secured a fourth-place league finish.
Laine and Wise fell to Pickerington Central's Richie Siebert and Tyler Wharton 7-5, 6-7, 7-5 in the third-place match.
Also for the Greyhounds, senior Joey Braughton was fifth in second singles, seniors Jacob Stephenson and Jared Stephenson were fifth in second doubles, senior Brandon Davis was sixth in third singles and senior Andrew Ray was seventh in first singles.
The Greyhounds had 19 points and went 3-4 in OCC-Ohio play, fourth behind champion Pickerington North (7-0). With league matches left to play, the standings weren't complete entering the week.
Grove City will play Thursday, May 16, and Saturday, May 18, in a Division I sectional at Pickerington Central. Davis and Ray drew first-round matches against Worthington Kilbourne freshmen Dhruv Taneja and Keaton Quinn, respectively, and Laine will open against Briggs freshman Luke Cooperrider.
Both doubles teams drew first-round byes. The Stephensons will play Wharton and Siebert or Zanesville senior Cody Dent and sophomore David Griffin in the second round, and Wise and Braughton will play Briggs sophomores Lorenzo Diaz and Trevor Browning or Zanesville senior Andrew Griffin and sophomore Nick Malek.
The top four finishers in singles and doubles advance to district May 24 and 25 at Hilliard Davidson.
In the OCC-Central tournament May 11 at Upper Arlington, Central Crossing junior Mikhail Yakhnitskiy placed sixth in second singles. Finishing seventh were junior Stephen Taylor in first singles, sophomore Kyle Deep in third singles and the first doubles team of juniors Mikey Massey and Dennis Meleshchuk.
Senior Zach Hall and freshman Luke Doudna placed eighth in second doubles.
The Comets finished seventh (12, 1-6) in the league behind UA (81, 7-0), Dublin Coffman (63, 6-1), Davidson (63, 5-2), Olentangy Liberty (42, 3-4), Thomas Worthington (36, 3-4) and Marysville (33, 3-4) and ahead of Westland (0, 0-7).
Central Crossing will participate in the UA sectional Thursday, May 16, and Saturday, May 18. Taylor plays Whetstone junior Drew Gabalski in the first round, Yakhnitskiy opens against Columbus West sophomore Juan Vera and Deep will play Westerville North junior Nick Pannell.
In doubles, Massey and Meleshchuk open against Northland seniors Mike Allen and Viet Nguyen, and Hall and sophomore Jacob Cerino will play Whetstone junior Ricky Bowman and freshman Winfield Slocum.
