AKRON — The Ready High School softball team couldn’t overcome defensive struggles in the fifth inning and lost to Columbia Station Columbia 3-1 in a Division III state semifinal June 7 at Firestone Stadium.

Columbia advanced to the championship game at 4 p.m. June 8 against Bloom-Carroll, which beat Pemberville Eastwood 11-1 in the other state semifinal June 7.

The Silver Knights finished 15-16 while the Raiders improved to 29-4.

“We knew they were going to put the ball in play,” Ready coach Jen Goff said. “This is the first time any of (my players) have been here and you could tell in the first inning and in the one inning where we had the errors.”

Columbia took a 1-0 lead in the fourth when catcher Christine Lyzen singled and third baseman Amanda Sedlock doubled her in.

Then in the fifth, Columbia shortstop Emily Viccarone singled and moved to third on a throwing error by third baseman Courtney Hackney. Center fielder Kaley Marshall singled to center to drive in Viccarone. Right fielder Nicolette Kunath reached on a fielder’s choice, moved to second on a passed ball and scored on a throwing error by shortstop Madison Gatley.

Ready scored its run in the fifth. Pitcher Julia Hall reached on a throwing error by Sedlock and advanced all the way to third. Hackney then singled her in.

The Knights stranded a runner on third in the fourth and one in the sixth before being retired in order in the seventh.

Hall gave up one unearned run on eight hits while striking out four and walking one. She finished the season 11-5.

Columbia pitcher Kailey Minarchick gave up no earned runs on six hits with three strikeouts and two walks to improve to 14-2.
