Greyhounds, Comets ready for sectional

The Grove City High School girls tennis team begins postseason competition Thursday, Oct. 3, and Saturday, Oct. 5, in a Division I sectional tournament at Hilliard Davidson.

The top four finishers in singles and doubles advance to district Oct. 11 and 12 at Davidson.

Senior Molly Brown opens in singles play against Pickerington North's Julia Robson, and senior Nicole Burris plays Davidson's Mary Carson in the first round. Junior Vicki Rohr opens against Delaware's Claire Brennan.

In doubles play, seniors Taylor Shawver and Katie Swartz-entruber have a first-round bye before playing Haley Will-oughby and Taylor Shirk of Marysville or Hannah Saleh and Eryn Henderson of Hilliard Bradley.

Senior Rachel Henricksen and junior Lauren Singleton open against Mikayla Knox and Sammi Hunt of Marysville.

Grove City was 8-8 overall before playing Central Crossing on Oct. 1.

The host Greyhounds placed second in the OCC seventh-place tournament Sept. 28. They totaled 15 points to finish behind Westerville South (17) and ahead of Westland (10) and Mount Vernon (8).

Grove City had two champions in Swartzentruber (second singles) and Brown (third singles).

Swartzentruber defeated Westland's Jenna Neff 6-0, 6-0 in her final and Brown beat Westerville South's Kristen Rudge 6-2, 6-2.

Shawver was runner-up in first singles, losing to Westerville South's Tara Thompson 6-2, 6-1 in the final. Singleton and sophomore Morgan Cox lost to Westerville South's Carissa Tedeschi and Eleni Velalis 6-4, 6-3 in the second-doubles final.

In first doubles, Rohr and Burris finished fourth, losing to Mount Vernon's Brittany Grabow and Marissa Sponseler 8-4 in the consolation match.

Comets to play in UA sectional

Central Crossing was 1-12 overall before playing Grove City on Oct. 1 and Westerville South on Oct. 2.

The Comets will compete Thursday, Oct. 3, and Saturday, Oct. 5, in a Division I sectional at Upper Arlington, with the top four finishers in singles and doubles advancing to district Oct. 11 and 12 at Davidson.

In singles play, junior Savannah Kovacs opens against fourth-seeded Maria Jeric of Watterson.

Senior Brooke Cosgray has a play-in match against Breanna Novotney of Franklin Heights, with the winner playing second-seeded Courtney Brown of Watterson.

Senior Kristen Chandler opens with a play-in match against Westerville South's Aleah Carey. The winner meets top-seeded Lauren Ghidotti of Watterson.

In doubles play, junior Tara Thomas and sophomore Michelle Massey open against Jana Whittredge and Jordyn Taylor of Teays Valley. Senior Ashley Fyffe and freshman Jessica Dines open against Sophia Lombard and Brenna O'Sullivan of Whetstone.

The Comets finished third (13) in the eighth-place OCC tournament Sept. 25 behind Groveport and Westerville North, which tied for first with 16 points. Franklin Heights (5) was fourth.

Kovacs was runner-up in second singles, losing to Groveport's Kaysea Smith 10-7 in the final. Massey was second in third singles after a 10-2 loss to Westerville North's Anna Sivey.

In the first-singles consolation match, Chandler defeated Sierra Guy of Franklin Heights 10-1.

Thomas and Dines finished second in first doubles after losing to Westerville North's Macy Chapman and Abby Engelhart 10-3. Fyffe and sophomore Sophia Semchishin defeated Katie Cloward and Kaydan Fohl of Franklin Heights 10-7 in the consolation final at second doubles.
