'Hounds, Comets fall short of district
Taylor Shawver and Katie Swartzentruber of the Grove City High School girls tennis team fell one win shy of advancing to the Division I district tournament, which is being held Friday, Oct. 11, and Saturday, Oct. 12, at Hilliard Davidson.
The seniors reached a district-qualifying match in doubles in the sectional held Oct. 3 and Oct. 5 at Davidson before losing to third-seeded Maddy Easdale and Sofia Gomez of Dublin Jerome 6-0, 6-0.
Shawver and Swartzentruber had a first-round bye and defeated Marysville's Haley Willoughby and Taylor Shirk 6-2, 6-3 in the second round.
Also at sectional, the doubles team of senior Rachel Henricksen and junior Lauren Singleton lost to Marysville's Mikayla Knox and Sammi Hunt 7-5, 6-2 in the first round and seniors Molly Brown and Nicole Burris and junior Vicki Rohr each lost her opening match in singles.
Brown fell to Pickerington North's Julia Robson 6-0, 6-3 in the first round, Burris lost to Davidson's Mary Carson 6-2, 6-1 in a play-in match and Rohr lost to Delaware's Claire Brennan 6-1, 6-2 in the first round.
The Greyhounds finished 9-8 overall.
Comets end season at sectional tourney
Central Crossing did not have any players advance from the Division I sectional held Oct. 3 and 5 at Upper Arlington.
The doubles team of junior Tara Thomas and sophomore Michelle Massey beat Teays Valley's Jana Whittredge and Jordyn Taylor 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 in the first round before losing to top-seeded Audrey Berger and Kyra Jung of UA 6-0, 6-0 in the second round.
The doubles team of senior Ashley Fyffe and freshman Jessica Dines lost to Whetstone's Sophia Lombard and Brenna O'Sullivan 6-1, 6-1 in the first round.
In singles, senior Brooke Cosgray was unable to play because of illness and was replaced by freshman Marlie Griffith, who beat Franklin Heights' Breanna Novotney 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in a play-in match before losing to Watterson's Courtney Brown 6-0, 6-0 in the first round.
Also in singles, junior Savannah Kovacs lost to fourth-seeded Maria Jeric of Watterson 6-0, 6-0 in the first round and senior Kristen Chandler lost a play-in match to Westerville South's Aleah Carey 6-3, 6-2.
The Comets finished 1-14 overall.
