Luca Ficarelli and Kalvin Koethke of the Grove City High School boys swimming and diving team each qualified for the Division I district meet in two individual events from a sectional Feb. 8 at Upper Arlington.
Koethke was second in the 50-yard freestyle (24.56 seconds) and third in the 100 free (48.11), and Ficarelli was sixth in the 500 free (5:04.26) and eighth in the 200 free (1:53.12). Both earned at-large berths to the district meet Saturday, Feb. 15, at Ohio State.
Koethke also helped the 200 free relay to a second-place finish (1:32.44) with Graham Sullivan, Adam Stretch and Isaac Stretch. The same four guided the 200 medley relay to fourth (1:45.65).
The boys scored 117 points and placed fourth of 11 teams behind champion St. Charles (340.5). The girls were 11th (19) of 13 teams behind champion UA (494).
Isaac Stretch advanced as an individual in the 200 individual medley (ninth, 2:09.01) and 100 breaststroke (1:04.13, seventh), as did William Best in the 500 free (12th, 5:23.7).
Mallory Best was the only individual qualifier for Grove City's girls, placing ninth in the 500 free (5:45.54). She also advanced on the eighth-place 400 free relay (4:15.74) with Kayla Heacock, Margo Leist and Allyson Payne.
The top two placers in each swimming event at district advance to the state meet Feb. 20-22 at Branin Natatorium in Canton. In addition, 16 at-large state berths will be awarded for each event based on times statewide.
Comets boys relays advance to district
All three of the Central Crossing boys team's relays earned at-large berths for district.
The 400 free relay was ninth (4:03.81) in the UA sectional, and the 200 medley relay (2:02.58) and 200 free relay (1:47.38) each finished 10th. The Comets' top individual was Evan Storts, who was 21st in the 50 free (26.22).
The boys scored 20 points and placed 10th and the girls had six points to finish 13th at sectional. Each team scored entirely on relays, and no girls advanced to district.
The Comets' girls were led by the 400 free relay (11th, 4:37.05) and 200 medley relay (12th, 2:18.64). Nikki Brewer's 25th-place effort in the 50 free (28.96) was the team's best individual finish.
