Hilliard Senior Center programs

The Hilliard Senior Center, 3810 Veterans Memorial Drive, offers a variety of programs for people age 55 and older. Lunches are served several days a week. The center is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The annual membership fee is $15. For more information, call 876-0747. The Ohio Senior Health Insurance Information Program (OSHIIP) provides free information and other health services to people covered by Medicare. An OSHIIP representative is available at the senior center at 1 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month. Those in need of insurance assistance should call the center to schedule an appointment.

The Hilliard Caregiver Support Group meets regularly at 9:30 a.m. the third Friday of each month. The meeting is for caregivers of those with Alzheimer's disease.

The Happiness Club luncheon, open to all senior citizens, is held at noon the second Friday of each month. Advance registration can be made by calling the center and is due by 4 p.m. the preceding Tuesday. Meal price is $4.

A special women's self-defense class for senior citizens will be offered Mondays, March 1 and 8. Participation is open to anyone able to stand and walk unassisted. Call for class times and registration information.

An open studio is available from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Fridays. Artists can bring drawings or paintings to work on and meet other artists. No fee; bring your own supplies.

The senior center is planning a variety of trips for 2010, including a riverboat cruise and overnight stay at the Grand Victoria Resort and Casino, Christmas at the Biltmore, a Veterans Day trip to Cincinnati, athletic events, BalletMet, Broadway Across America performances and more. Varied exercise opportunities are available to members of the senior center, including water aerobics, walking, Tai Chi, general fitness, line dancing, bowling, corn hole and Zumba gold. Classes meet at 3 p.m. Mondays, with a fee of $2 per day.

A daytime progressive euchre party will begin at 11 a.m. Friday, March 5. Advance registration is required.

The center is a collection point for food donations to the Hilliard Welfare Society. Drop off non-perishable donations between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Some weekend and evening hours are available; call to arrange a time.

The center is currently collecting care package items to be shipped overseas to servicemen and women. Collected items will be donated to Buckeye Military Moms and will be shipped in May. Suggested items include non-perishable snacks, personal care items, hand games, phone cards, batteries, cards, dice games, socks, fabric softener sheets, baby wipes, pens and note pads.

AARP volunteers are available at the senior center during February and March to assist seniors with completing 2009 tax filings. The free program is intended for low to middle-income individuals. Call for eligibility and scheduling.
