A Hilliard church has launched a new church to serve communities northwest of Columbus.

On Sept. 19, Catalyst Community Church had its grand opening service at Glacier Ridge Elementary School in Jerome Township. The church is targeted to those living in the U.S. routes 33/42 corridor from west Dublin to Plain City and Marysville.

"We're not your ordinary, run-of-the-mill church," said lead pastor Bradley Reith, a 35-year old former football player originally from Phoenix, in a statement. "We don't want a bunch of religious posers; we want people who desire to be real, raw, and relational about God and life."

Catalyst is the daughter church of Life Community Church, 4400 Cemetery Road, Hilliard.

"Our desire was to spread out, rather than build one big church," said Tom Bennardo, Senior Pastor at Life Community Church. "It was our intention to get large enough to where we could then send off a nucleus of people into an extended area and start all over again, birth another church that would have the same DNA as our church, same values and passions but a fresh start to reach a new area. Before the recession hit, everybody was saying that was where the next growth was going to happen in the metro Columbus area."

As the planting church, the 500-member non-denominational Life Community Church itself started from scratch in 1995, Bennardo said.

"We were 7 years in the movie theaters, Movies 12 at Mill Run, and then we moved into the old Sutherland's building where we are now in Hilliard."

Someday, Catalyst will stop renting out Glacier Ridge and hold its services elsewhere, too. However, Bennardo said the early Church met in people's homes, so a large, fancy edifice isn't necessary to worship.

"It's not about the building or even what happens on Sundays. It's a lot of what goes on in communities and homes. I don't want to say we're one church in two locations, but you're going to get the same heart, honesty and message in both locations. If you're closer or more comfortable to one than the other, then you're welcome at either place."
