The Norwich Township trustees completed their business for the year in a routine meeting Dec. 20 at the Safety Services Building.

The board of trustees chairman for 2011 will be Mike Cope, who was nominated by the current chairman, Chuck Buck. Vice chairman Larry Earman will continue in that role.

Township fiscal officer Jamie Miles said the chairman is the person who represents the board as the primary contact for the public. The vice chairman assumes that role if the chairman is unavailable. Miles said the township hasn't always assigned those duties, with the board nominating a chairman and vice chairman in recent years.

Cope's term expires in Dec. 2011, while Buck and Earman's terms expire in December 2013. The trustees serve for four years with no term limits.

In other business Monday, the trustees approved a resolution to retain Loveland & Brosius as legal counsel for Norwich Township in 2011 and approved pay for themselves and the fiscal officer on a monthly basis.

The trustees also approved $16,000 in repairs to Fire Station 81's damaged bay door frame and brick/stone pier and bay door. The repairs were necessary when a truck accidentally backed into the door, located on Northwest Parkway.

Although insurance will cover much of the repairs, "this is a damned expensive mistake," Buck said.

Fire Chief Dave Long said the vehicles have visual warning systems on them, but he's also looking at installing an auditory warning device to prevent future accidents.

Long also asked the trustees for their advice regarding a 2003 Chevrolet Astro the department owns.

The van, which has only 50,000 miles, requires $2,300 in engine repairs. Long said he didn't think the Astro was worth repairing, the vehicle was scheduled for replacement anyway, and the department could receive some money for salvaging the vehicle.

Cope told Long to come back to the trustees at the next meeting with a recommendation for a fuel-efficient replacement.
