The Ohio Parks and Recreation Association recognized the Hilliard Recreation and Parks Department as a winner in its 2012 Annual Awards of Excellence contest.
Hilliard’s recreation department won a first place award in the Senior and Active Adults category for the Hilliard Park Cafe program.
The Hilliard Park Cafe offers Hilliard area senior citizens something different from the traditional senior lunch menu. Since its inception 20 years ago, it has evolved from a simple senior lunch program to an innovative concept that fills the nutritional and social needs of seniors.
This past year, the program was reinvented and renamed the Hilliard Park Cafe to better fit what seniors in the community told the department they wanted: affordable, home-cooked meals they could share with other people in a fun and enriching social setting.
The OPRA Annual Awards of Excellence will be presented at a banquet on Feb. 26, 2013, in Battelle Hall North at the Columbus Convention Center. One first-place award winner will receive the 2012 Governor’s Award for Parks and Recreation, a “best-in-show” prize which includes a $500 contribution to the parks and recreation foundation of the agency winner.
The awards are judged in a two-tiered process, which includes a panel of Ohio parks and recreation professionals, as well as the association’s board of directors.
Incorporated in 1963, the OPRA is a non-profit, public interest organization representing more than 1,300 board members who work to provide quality parks and recreation facilities and opportunities for all Ohioans while protecting and preserving Ohio’s natural resources and positively impacting local economies and the health of its citizens.
