The Hilliard Arts Council will perform the musical Baby March 1-3 at the Hilliard Darby High School Performing Arts Center, 4200 Leppert Road.

Director Robin Brenneman said she was inspired to choose the play after once seeing it with her husband, Ken, at a Broadway theater in New York City.

"Baby is a play Ken and I saw a long time ago," Brenneman said. "I wanted to do something with a smaller cast and remembered this play. It's the first time the arts council has presented it.

"It's not a common show, but I'm excited to try something new."

The play has six lead actors -- three men and three women -- who portray couples of different ages expecting children.

"(Baby) tells the story of three couples, one in their 20s, one in their 30s, and another in the 40s, each of whom discovers they are having a baby," Brenneman said.

Brenneman said she sent the script to the actors to gauge their interest in the material and, when all responded favorably, proceeded with her choice for the winter musical.

Sybille Pearson wrote Baby with music by David Shire and lyrics by Richard Maltby. The play ran for 241 performances at the Ethel Barrymore Theater in New York City from December 1983 to July 1984. It has not been revived and was never adapted as a screenplay.

The play takes places on a college campus where the couples are either students or faculty members. The script does not have a specific setting, but Brenneman chose to make Otterbein College the setting, illustrated by cast members occasionally wearing an Otterbein shirt or sweater.

"It has some humor but is also serious at times," Brenneman said.

The yet-unwed 20-somethings are overwhelmed, the 30-somethings have achieved pregnancy with some difficulty, and the 40-somethings have grown children and did not expect to have a new child on the way.

Cast as the college-aged couple, Danny Hooper and Lizzie Fields, are Brian Horne and Erin Reissig.

Kevin Doll and Leslie Shaffer portray the 30-something couple, Nick and Pam Sakarian.

Kurt Zielenbach and Krista Morelli are cast at the 40-something couple, Alan and Arlene McNalley.

Showtimes for Baby are at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, March 1-2, and at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 3.

Ticketswill be available at the door. They are $15 for adults, $12 for students and senior citizens.
