Young promoted to battalion chief
Norwich Township Fire Chief Bob Kaufman on Feb. 19 recognized several firefighters for promotions and meritorious service.
Kaufman recognized Greg Young, promoted from captain to battalion chief to replace Greg Collier, who retired Feb. 10.
Battalion chiefs are the commanding officers at emergency scenes and are responsible for coordinating efforts of all participating firefighters.
Firefighter Jeff Evans was individually recognized and his unit as a whole received a commendation for their life-saving actions at a house fire Jan. 16.
Evans rescued a 52-year-old woman from a ground-floor bedroom in the burning house at 3239 Scioto Farms Drive.
The unresponsive woman was admitted to the intensive care unit at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and has since been released from the hospital.
A cat and a dog also were safely removed from the residence.
In addition, Kaufman recognized three firefighters for 10 years of service to the department: Tony Campbell, Kevin Hayes and Marty Spencer.
In formal action at the Feb. 19 trustees' meeting, trustees approved the purchase of two graves from owners for the same price they had purchased the graves.
They also approved a request from two Norwich Township residents for exemption from the township's refuse-collection contract.
Residents who present an alternative for waste disposal can be exempted from the township's contract.
