Srikanth to compete in national math competition

A Hilliard Memorial Middle School student will represent Ohio at the national MATHCOUNTS competition, set May 10 in Washington, D.C.

Varun Srikanth earned second place in a field of 190 students and 31 teams March 9 at the state MATHCOUNTS competition at Columbus State Community College. The top four students from the state competition will compete individually and as a team in the national competition.

"I'm excited about going to Washington, D.C.," Srikanth said.

In addition to the competition, Srikanth said, he is looking forward to visiting landmarks that he did not have the opportunity to see during a previous visit to the nation's capital.

Unlike algebra and geometry, which use formulas for solving problems, the state MATHCOUNTS competition requires the use of "creative problem-solving, not formulas," Srikanth said.

The other members of the Ohio team are: Sarah Wang of New Albany Middle School, who placed third in the state; Peter Zhu of Mason Middle School in Mason, who placed first; and Ju Hyun Park of Greene Intermediate School in Cincinnati, who placed fourth.

Their transportation and lodging will be paid for by the Engineers Foundation of Ohio, which sponsors MATHCOUNTS for middle school students.

When competing as a team, the four students will be coached by Sallie Carney of Mason Middle School. Her team placed first in the state completion and included Zhu.

"We'll meet about twice a month between now and then, either (in central Ohio) or (the Cincinnati area) to practice for the competition," Srikanth said.

Srikanth is the son of Srikanth Loganathan and Bobby Srikanth.
