Various Hilliard officials will observe Arbor Day on Friday, April 26, with a tree planting at Beacon Elementary School, 3600 Lacon Road.
Twelve to 15 students at Beacon will join Principal Jane Leach, Mayor Don Schonhardt, Public Service Director Butch Seidle, members of the Shade Tree Commission, school board members, district administrators, and city service department employees at the 2 p.m. ceremony.
Leach and Schonhardt will make opening remarks and an Arbor Day proclamation will be announced.
The tree planting is scheduled to begin at 2:20 p.m.
The Arbor Day observance and tree planting is one of four requirements for Hilliard to maintain its status as a Tree City USA community, a title it has earned for the 31st consecutive year.
The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the National Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service.
In addition to an annual Arbor Day observance, a municipality or village must have a tree board or commission, a tree-care ordinance and a comprehensive community forestry program to be named a Tree City USA.
