Since she was old enough to grasp a crayon, Kaitlyn Withem has been drawing, coloring or painting.

Withem, 27, now shares her love and passion for art at the new Elements Art Studio, 3994 Main St. in Hilliard.

Some of her own work, typically acrylic paint on canvas, adorns the Hilliard residence she shares with her husband, Adam, two dogs and a cat.

"I like abstracts, but what I paint really depends on my mood that day," she said.

An art teacher at Berkshire Middle School in the Olentangy Local school district, Withem has extended her student base to adults and other children after opening her Hilliard studio last month.

"It's an exciting experience," said Withem, a 2004 graduate of Westerville North High School and Otterbein College.

She said she gave up a coaching job at Berkshire Middle School to operate the studio.

"It's a great part-time, summer job, and I love doing it," Withem said.

She instructs classes throughout the summer weeks for children and adults.

The 11-member adult class, called "Corks and Canvas" is a three-hour session where students enjoy wine and cheese while recreating artistic masterpieces under Withem's direction.

Her most recent class replicated the Vincent van Gogh work, Starry Night.

Kimberly Schroeder, 43, of Hilliard, is a member of the class.

"I've never painted before ... ever," said Schroeder, who took advantage of a Groupon discount Withem had offered.

"I thought it sounded like fun and it has been a blast," she said.

Also in the class is Charlie Grubb, 36, of Hilliard, and his fiancee, Jaimie Laughlin, of Westerville.

"We heard about this studio and jumped at the opportunity," said Grubb, who also invited Alan and Tiffany Faires, both of Westerville, to join him and Laughlin.
