Church builds new brand on foundation of faith
With the joint goals of reinvigorating current parish members and welcoming new members, St. Brendan the Navigator Catholic Church in Hilliard has unveiled a new logo and motto.
Jason Jourdan, the St. Brendan staff member who created the logo, said he is not aware of any other parish that has undertaken a concentrated branding and marketing initiative, but he hopes others will follow the example.
The logo depicts a boat with a green sail bearing a cross. The boat resembles a currach, an ancient leather-sided Irish watercraft similar to one St. Brendan, the parish’s namesake, might have sailed.
St. Brendan was an Irish saint and explorer who lived in the fifth century.
The image references St. Brendan’s seafaring explorations as a modern-day call to explore one’s faith, Jourdan said.
The St. Brendan parish also developed a motto to accompany the new image: “Life is a voyage on a sea of faith.”
The logo and motto will be prominently showcased at the annual St. Brendan Parish Festival from 6 p.m. to midnight Aug. 9 and 10 at the church building and grounds, 4475 Dublin Road in Hilliard.
The Rev. Robert Penhallurick will speak about the new logo at 8:30 p.m. Aug. 10.
“We have a very special church community that demonstrates their faith every day (but) far too often, people attempt to take on the struggle of life alone,” Penhallurick said.
Jourdan said the new logo is steeped in the tradition and namesake of the parish.
“While this marketing approach may be new, the faith foundation it is built upon spans centuries,” Jourdan said.
He said the marketing effort coincides with a global call for a “year of faith” in Catholicism.
“Our intent is to modernize externally and internally ... and to respond to a new evangelization,” Jourdan said. “We are seeking to welcome people and let them know this is a place where they can begin or continue their voyage of faith.”
