In anticipation for the 2013-14 school year, I am excited to report that Hilliard City Schools is ready for tomorrow.

Hilliard City Schools' mission is to empower students to thrive in the 21st century. Education today is a complex and critical component of our national, state and local community. I'm proud to say that Hilliard City Schools is positioned to move forward and meet these important challenges.

We are very thankful for the support of our community. We will continue to plan conservatively and spend tax dollars wisely. We have communicated with our local and state legislatures to make sure resident voices were heard regarding the latest state biennium budget.

We have trimmed and cut where possible, saving more than $19.6 million since 2008. We have implemented energy-efficient operations and reallocated existing resources that have made our schools greener and leaner in their operations. We will continue to search for cost savings in every area of our system.

We have done all of this while also keeping an eye on the changing educational needs of our students.

Today's students need a different skill set to be competitive for tomorrow's job market. They need to communicate and collaborate with different people and cultures from across the globe. It is important that they are able to creatively solve problems.

Our students need to become responsible members of the digital world and understand not only what the answer is, but how to process information and critically think about situations.

It is our responsibility to develop students who are ready to lead our community and our nation regardless of what the future may hold.

We also are thankful that we have great leadership in place to continue the legacy and tradition of excellence that this community has come to expect.

The Hilliard Board of Education invites all community members to welcome new Superintendent John Marschhausen and his family from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 12, in the McVey Innovative Learning Center Annex, 5323 Cemetery Road in Hilliard.

John has a dynamic personality and his career success has proven him to be a strong leader. We are fortunate that someone with his experience and vision is joining our team. He will help to lead our students, staff and community and continue to press for excellence. The Board of Education is excited to welcome someone with his talents to the community.

It is because of the district's strong fiscal management, the support of our community, an intense focus on the educational needs of today's students and great leaders such as John that I am proud to say I am a member of the Hilliard school district.

As a parent, I know my children are receiving a great education, and as a resident, I know the investment in my home is protected because of the difference a Hilliard education makes.

Andy Teater is president of the Hilliard school board.
