Darby students to sing in London next year

Members of several choral groups at Hilliard Darby High School will perform early next year in the United Kingdom.

"It's an outstanding opportunity and experience ... based on our reputation for excellence," said Michael Martin, director of choral activities at Darby.

Martin said 70 students are expected to travel to London on March 22-29.

"We will be performing in several cathedrals, as well as a high school," Martin said.

Martin said some of the performances will be impromptu, such as on-the-spot numbers the choir might perform while sightseeing in London.

Choirs from Darby have performed in London in the past, Martin said, and their excellence laid the groundwork for future trips.

The school's travel agent made the arrangements for performances and tourist destinations.

"(The agent) is aware of our reputation and is able to schedule our performances," Martin said.

To help fund the trip, boosters for Darby's choral groups already have taken action.

The Upper Arlington Lutheran Church at Mill Run, 3500 Mill Run Drive, will host a spaghetti dinner fundraiser Monday, Aug. 26, and Tuesday, Aug. 27.

Seating times for the pasta dinners are 5:30, 6:30 and 7:30 p.m.

The menu includes bread, salad, a dessert and a beverage.

Proceeds from the dinner and a silent auction will help defray the travel expenses of the 70 students expected to make the trip.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 4-12.
