Davidson to honor three teachers at homecoming
Three former Hilliard music educators will be honored in pregame ceremonies Friday, Oct. 18, at the Hilliard Davidson High School homecoming football game.
Ken Brenneman, John Crumley and Cindy Konzen will receive plaques from members of the Hilliard High School class of 1978.
Crumley will direct the Davidson marching band, as well as the visiting Olentangy Liberty High School marching band, in a pregame performance, organizers said.
The idea to honor the trio of music educators was hatched during a 35-year reunion of the class of 1978.
"We were talking about out teachers (and) about how much they meant to us," said Molly Tocci-Newberry.
Many of the students had been involved in the school's music programs and reached out to recognize Brenneman, a former director of choral music; Crumley, the former marching band director, and Konzen, the former orchestra director.
In the summer of 1978, Brenneman arranged for Hilliard students to attend an international choral competition in Mexico City.
"Traveling abroad is common now, but not then. It was unheard of for us to take kids to a competition in Mexico," said Robin Brenneman, who joined her husband to personally finance a portion of the trip.
"We stayed in the Olympic Village (built for the Olympics the city had recently hosted)," Brenneman said. "It was a great experience."
Any members of the class of 1978 wishing to participate in the pregame ceremony can meet at 6:45 p.m. Oct. 18 in the choir room at Davidson High School, 5100 Davidson Road.
