The second annual Cody Jewell Trick or Trot Family Fun Run is scheduled Saturday, Oct. 26, at Hoffman Trails Elementary School, 4301 Hoffman Farms Drive.
The 5K run and walk begins at 10 a.m. A 1-mile event for children also is planned.
Proceeds fund an academic scholarship in memory of Cody Jewell, a second-grade student at Ridgewood Elementary School, who was struck and killed by a car the morning of Sept. 14, 2010, while waiting for a school bus on Scioto Darby Road.
Hoffman Trails Elementary School became the site of the event memorializing Jewell because Julie Caserta, a fifth-grade teacher at Hoffman, witnessed the accident that claimed Jewell's life.
No charges were filed in the fatal accident. Jewell had run into the road near his bus stop where there is a 45-degree bend at the Interstate 270 overpass.
After running the Columbus Marathon in Jewell's memory the following year, Caserta opted to establish a school-based community event to honor him.
Last year, the inaugural event raised enough money to provide a $1,000 scholarship to a graduating senior at each of the district's three high schools.
About 185 people participated. Proceeds were augmented by donations from the Student Ambassadors Club of Hilliard Bradley High School. Those students continue to support the event.
Caserta said she chose to fund academic scholarships after learning that Jewell had constantly encouraged his mother to finish her college degree.
"I learned that his mother, in fact, completed an associate's degree one year to the day after (Jewell died)," Caserta said. "(Cody) had an understanding of the 'big picture' of education and wanted his mom to go back to school," so a scholarship seemed to be a natural fit.
While it also is a competitive and timed event, entrants in the 5K run and walk are encouraged to wear costumes.
Participants may register online at speedysneakers.com or on race day. Participants receive an event T-shirt and prizes are awarded for top finishers.
