Hilliard officials recently promoted police officer Suzanne Muraco to sergeant and hired Natalie Riley to a newly created civilian position at police headquarters.
They are believed to be the Hilliard Division of Police's first female supervisors, according to Chief Doug Francis.
"As a police chief, you love these kinds of days," Francis said prior to publicly introducing Muraco and Riley during a ceremony May 20 at the Joint Safety Services Building.
Muraco, a 1992 graduate of Davidson High School, became acquainted with the Hilliard Division of Police in 1989 as part of its Explorer program.
"(Muraco) is one of those people who have carried the Hilliard torch higher than anyone else," Francis said.
Muraco joined the ranks as a full-time officer Oct. 3, 1995.
She worked in the patrol bureau until 2007 when she was assigned to the department's training unit.
As a training officer, she works with new fellow officers on procedures for defensive driving, firearms and stun guns. She also assists in the hiring process of new officers.
"I think I've processed about half of our officers today, it seems," Muraco said.
Muraco fills the sergeant's position created earlier this year by the retirement of Mike Redmond.
"I've been with the Hilliard police department since I was 16 and I've seen a lot of change," Muraco said. "I'm happy to be a part of that change and continue serving our citizens.
Not the least of these changes was Hilliard's decision to contract with Dublin police for police, fire and EMS dispatching through the Northwest Regional Emergency Communications Center in Dublin.
Hilliard's dispatchers were relocated to Dublin, but Francis said he wanted to maintain a 24-7 presence at the Hilliard police headquarters.
"We want someone to be here at all times," Francis said.
Thus, Hilliard created the civilian support-services unit. Its supervisor, Riley, has worked for the past 10 years as records manager of the Ohio State University Police Department.
"I'm really excited to be here and start bringing it all together," Riley said.
Francis said the unit's immediate initiatives include retooling the records-management system and computer-aided dispatching.
