Sixteen years ago, Andy and Karen Limbert were new to Hilliard and looking for a Catholic church.
One day they stopped at St. Brendan the Navigator Catholic Church on Dublin Road because they were curious about 30 people with grills and a trailer with a stereo system in the church building's parking lot.
"'This is our festival,' they told us," Andy Limbert said.
The Limberts became members at the church and volunteered to help organize the St. Brendan Parish Festival.
They became more involved each year and today are among about a dozen core volunteers who plan the two-day parish festival that fills the church campus with thousands of patrons.
"We believe it is an event that is fun for the whole family," said Andy Limbert, who serves as chairman of the sponsorship committee for the parish festival.
This year's parish festival is scheduled from 6 p.m. to midnight, Friday, Aug. 8, and from 3 p.m. to midnight, Saturday, Aug. 9, at St. Brendan, 4475 Dublin Road in Hilliard.
The festival will feature carnival-style rides, games for children, live entertainment, a silent auction, games of chance and a raffle for a $20,000 cash prize.
"It's a great 'date night.' There are things for the whole family to do all day, but some (couples) get a baby sitter and come back later at night," Limbert said.
A few changes have been made to the festival, he said.
For example, the children's game section has been moved from a grassy field to the playground adjacent to the church building.
"We thought it would be more convenient to have the children's games closer to the playground," Limbert said.
The Franklin County Sheriff's Office also will bring some equipment.
"The sheriff's office is bringing some of their things to show off for the kids," Limbert said.
Parking and admission will be free.
