Hilliard Memorial Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4931, steak fry open to the public, 5 to 8 p.m. Sept. 12, at 2436 Walcut Road. Events are held every second Friday of the month. A requested donation of $17 includes a steak cooked to order, baked potato, salad bar, dinner roll, coffee and dessert. Additional soft drinks are available at customer's cost.

Avant-Garde Art and Craft Show, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 20, in the parish hall at St. Agatha Church, 1860 Northam Road, Columbus. More than 100 vendors are scheduled to participate. A portion of the proceeds from this show will benefit the charity Local Matters, a nonprofit dedicated to introducing the community to healthy, affordable and sustainable food through education and other programs. Junior League Bargain Box, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 4, at Goodwill Columbus' Grandview-area corporate headquarters, 1331 Edgehill Road, Grandview. In addition to having a new venue for the sale, Junior League's 450 members will also utilize Goodwill's six retail stores in Franklin County to collect Bargain Box donations up the time of the event. Items being collected include linens, towels, pans, baby clothes, toys and purses. Proceeds from the event will support the Junior League's community projects, including the Kelton House Museum and Garden, Adopt-a-Backpack for Children and Kids in the Kitchen. Unsold items will be donated to Goodwill and sold in its retail stores.
AARP Foundation Senior Community Service Employment Program assists unemployed Franklin, Delaware and Licking county workers age 55 and over with securing employment. The program offers paid work experience, specialized training, upgrading of skills and job-search assistance. Age, income and residency requirements apply. Battelle Darby Creek MetroPark Nature Center, "Emergence of Deer Ticks and Lyme Disease in Ohio: Now What?," noon to 1:30 and 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. Sept. 10, at Battelle Darby Creek MetroPark Nature Center, 1775 Darby Creek Drive, Galloway. Topics will include the spread of disease-carrying ticks in Ohio; tick habitat/host preferences; review disease symptoms in people and dogs; and prevention tips. The program is open to the public.
Tolles Career and Technical Center, orientations for adult basic literacy-education classes, Sept. 16-18 and Nov. 4-6, at the center, 7877 U.S. 42, Plain City. These classes are free to eligible students looking to improve skills in reading, writing and math. The classes help prepare students for the GED test and to prepare for postsecondary training. English for speakers of other languages classes are available for non-native English speakers 18 or older on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.
