Darby boys looking to complete sweep of Jerome

The Hilliard Darby High School boys basketball team continues the second half of its OCC-Cardinal Division schedule Friday, Jan. 25, at Dublin Jerome.

The Panthers are 4-4 in the league. They were 9-5 overall before playing Upper Arlington on Jan. 22.

On Dec. 14, Darby defeated Jerome 54-51 as junior guard Taylor Van Winkle scored 16 points, senior forward Nic Baker had 13 and senior guard Caleb Day added 10.

The Panthers will look for a season sweep of host Worthington Kilbourne on Tuesday, Jan. 29.

On Dec. 18, Van Winkle scored 13 points and sophomore guard David Dennis added 10 in a 52-41 victory over the Wolves.

Tough tests against a pair of state-ranked teams made for a difficult week, but the Panthers rebounded from the challenge with a 48-33 win over Hilliard Davidson on Jan. 19.

Baker had 15 points and senior center Clay Schmidt added eight.

Darby lost 65-41 on Jan. 15 to Watterson, which was ranked fourth in last week's Division II state poll behind top-ranked Dayton Thurgood Marshall. Baker and Day both scored 10 points.

On Jan. 18, the Panthers lost 67-44 to Westerville North, the No. 2 team in last week's Division I state poll behind Northland.

Day had 10 points and senior guard Cade Carter added nine.

Girls team has busy week

The girls team was looking to snap a five-game losing streak when it played Thomas Worthington on Jan. 22.

The Panthers entered the game 3-12 overall. They are 1-8 in the OCC-Cardinal entering their game Friday, Jan. 25, at home against Jerome.

Darby lost to Jerome 48-40 on Dec. 14 despite 23 points from senior center Emily Krumpe.

Darby plays Saturday, Jan. 26, at Davidson before returning to OCC-Cardinal play at home Tuesday, Jan. 30, against Kilbourne.

Senior guard Katie Esposito led a balanced attack with 13 points in a 56-45 win over the Wolves on Dec. 18. Junior forward Caitlin Snyder and senior guard Sydney Palsgrove both had 12 points and Krumpe added 11.

The Panthers lost to DeSales 53-37 on Jan. 15 as Krumpe scored 12 points.

On Jan. 18, Darby lost to Westerville North 62-41 in a league game. Esposito scored 13 points and Krumpe added 11.
